This is the Arabic letter ghain, غ, in a stretched mathematical style. Arabic and Persian mathematical notation treats letter styles as text that can distinguish symbols; this is not a font effect. Unlike ordinary Arabic letters, Arabic mathematical symbols do not reshape to join their neighbors.
The style family draws on a form of the Arabic alphabet used in manuscripts and traditional print. Arabic-letter algebraic shorthand appears in Maghribi works by the late 12th century; in the 15th century, al-Qalasadi used letters and word initials in calculations. He continued an older practice rather than inventing it.
