What ᯅ means
It represents b with an inherent “a”: the syllable “ba.”
Batak is an abugida, a writing system where each consonant carries an inherent vowel. The default vowel is “a,” so a vowel sign changes the syllable and a final mark can cancel that vowel. In Mandailing, Pakpak, Toba and Simalungun spelling, ᯅ writes b with its default vowel. The surrounding letters determine the full syllable.
How did Batak writing develop?
It grew from older scripts and regional traditions. Batak belongs to the family of scripts descended from Brahmi, an ancient Indian writing system. Its route into Sumatra is debated: some accounts trace it through Pallava, a southern Indian script, and Kawi, a historic Southeast Asian script; another proposes an early local Sumatran script influenced by Pallava. Historical accounts trace its spread north from Angkola-Mandailing toward Karo. The oldest known Batak manuscript in a European collection dates to 1764; that collection milestone does not mark the script’s beginning.
A pustaha is a folded book made from tree bark. Datu, ritual specialists, used these books for remedies, magic and divination, writing in the ritual language hata poda. Latin writing became standard for most communication by the 19th and early 20th centuries, while Batak script persisted in traditional and cultural settings. Unicode 17 records its teaching in schools mainly for cultural purposes and its use on some shop and government signs.
Why do Batak ba letters have different shapes?
Regional spelling and font support both affect the displayed form. ᯅ is the kidney-bean-shaped ba; ᯆ is the separate oval Karo ba. At the first Toba Batak Congress in October 2022, participants adopted the oval shape for Toba because it was more common in manuscripts. Older Toba documents can retain ᯅ; the convention adopted there favors ᯆ.
For a syllable that ends in a consonant, enter the first consonant, vowel sign, final consonant, then pangolat, the mark that cancels the final vowel. A font may display the vowel sign after the final consonant while the saved text stays in sound order. That visual move is normal shaping, not automatically a typing error.
A Batak writing-system letter, read as part of a syllable or word.
For Karo or Toba writing, check the intended spelling before treating ᯅ and ᯆ as interchangeable.

1Why does ᯅ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Batak block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
