Bopomofo Letter Er

34/43

In Zhuyin (Bopomofo), ㄦ writes Mandarin’s “er” syllable, pronounced with the tongue tip curled slightly back; after another syllable, it marks erhua, an r-colored ending read with that syllable. It appears in pronunciation notes and Zhuyin input. Its shape follows 儿, but ㄦ is sound notation, not a Han-character spelling.

What ㄦ means

It writes Mandarin’s “er” syllable; after another syllable, it marks erhua.

Alone, ㄦ represents the Mandarin syllable written “er” in Hanyu Pinyin, the Latin-letter guide to its sounds; pronounce it with the tongue tip curled slightly back. After another syllable, it marks erhua: an r-colored ending read with that syllable, as in 這兒 (“here”).

Zhuyin was designed around Mandarin’s consonant beginnings, vowel endings, and tones; its symbols were adapted from Chinese-character forms. Its first version was created in 1913 and released in 1918. In 1935, the Ministry of Education issued a print model placing Zhuyin beside Han characters to ease learning. Taiwan still uses it in instruction and keyboard input as of 2026.

Is ㄦ the same character as 儿 or 兒?

No. ㄦ is a sound sign; 儿 and 兒 are Han characters.

In simplified Chinese, 儿 can mean “child” or mark erhua; traditional Chinese writes the same character as 兒. Zhuyin ㄦ records pronunciation, so it may annotate one of these characters without becoming that character.

What does it mean if someone sends ㄦ alone?

By itself, ㄦ is a sound note; context supplies the tone.

A 2003 study of Taiwan college bulletin boards describes “Zhuyin Wen”—writing Chinese with Zhuyin in place of some Han characters—as cute or naïve, recalling schoolwork. It also records criticism that this style could seem informal or suggest weak command of Han characters.

Someone taught Zhuyin can read ㄦ directly; a reader without that training may need the surrounding message. That social reading belongs to a wider writing style, not to the lone sign by itself. If a friend sends only ㄦ, ask which sound or word they mean before assigning it a mood.

Neutral as pronunciation notation; any playful or schoolish tone comes from the surrounding Zhuyin writing.

A bare ㄦ does not reveal the sender’s mood.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ㄦ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
