Box Drawings Light Double Dash Horizontal

╌ is a light double-dash box-drawing line for horizontal dividers in text diagrams and terminal-style layouts. Its separated strokes repeat into a segmented rule; a monospaced font helps it align with neighboring box characters.

What ╌ means

Use ╌ as a segmented horizontal rule in monospaced text. This light double-dash box-drawing character works in text tables, terminal-style interfaces, diagrams, source-code comments, and dividers where a continuous line would be too strong.

It is one cell in a larger drawing system: repeat it horizontally for a broken boundary or separator, and align neighboring box-drawing characters in the same monospaced grid.

Its roots are in character-cell graphics

The box-drawing family preserves compatibility with character-cell graphic sets used before 1990. On fixed-width text screens, each character occupied a cell, so line strokes could meet neighboring cells to make tables, borders, and panels.

Data General's Line Drawing Character Set included a similar horizontal double-dash mark. The form's job is structural: it builds dividers and borders from aligned character cells.

Technical and diagrammatic; its meaning depends on the line or border it helps construct.

In ordinary prose, it can look like a stray mark rather than punctuation.

1

Why does ╌ look broken?

The gaps are part of its design. A proportional font can also misalign it with neighboring box characters, while a font without the glyph may show an empty box or nothing.
