brahmi digit seven

Brahmi Digit Seven

106/115

For repeated entry, use a Unicode-aware Brahmi keyboard; a character picker works for one-off use because the ordinary 7 key does not produce 𑁭. The Brahmi numeral 7 records seven in Brahmi’s decimal-digit system and belongs in historical transcription or deliberately archaic typography. The separate sign 𑁘 also means seven, but belongs to an older additive system.

What 𑁭 means

Use a Unicode Brahmi keyboard for repeated entry. The ordinary 7 key gives the familiar digit, not 𑁭. Dedicated Unicode Brahmi layouts expose a decimal digit row; when no such layout is installed, a character picker handles one-off entry.

What does the Brahmi numeral 7 mean?

It records seven in Brahmi’s decimal digit set. The number system served practical records: quantities on inscriptions, coins, and other written objects. Its early notation used separate signs for units and higher values, before the later positional decimal arrangement.

Brahmi numerals appear in Ashokan-era inscriptions around the middle of the third century BCE. An early seven is shown at Naneghat in Maharashtra in the second century BCE. The changing written forms are part of an evolving numeral tradition.

What is the older Brahmi number seven?

𑁘 is a separate seven sign from an older notation system. It belongs to Brahmi’s additive-multiplicative number signs; 𑁭 is a decimal digit.

Gupta numerals developed from Brahmi during the fourth–sixth centuries CE, and Nagari forms followed around the seventh century. Physical examples of decimal place-value numerals appear around the middle of the first millennium CE, as Brahmi-derived scripts carried the system across South and Southeast Asia. Kharoṣṭhī, a separate script written right to left, had its own additive numerals; it is a comparison, not an established parent of Brahmi, and a direct connection remains speculative.

A historical-script numeral; in modern text, it signals a deliberate archaic or scholarly choice.

Some readers will not recognize it as seven; unsupported fonts may show a box.

Why does Brahmi seven show as a box?

A font issue. As of 2026, display depends on whether the device has a Brahmi-capable font or suitable fallback; without one, a missing-glyph box can appear.
