What ᨁ means
It marks ga with an inherent a vowel. A following vowel sign changes the syllable; it is not a bare consonant.
The Lontara writing tradition appears by the 14th century; genealogies—family-descent records—were an early use. Palm leaves came before paper broadened the range of texts.
Lontara belongs to the Brahmic family of scripts used across South and Southeast Asia. It may relate historically to Javanese writing and shares features with Tagalog writing. Buginese writing later displaced Makasar’s script; some public signs use Lontara to signal Bugis identity and script revival, documented in 2025.

Questions people ask
1Why does ᨁ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Buginese block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.

ᨁ\1A01Why is ᨁ a box on my screen?
fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
