Cham Consonant Sign Final M

68/83

Typing ꩌ needs a Cham keyboard — iCham's Rumix method produces it with -M. In Cham writing it is a combining mark that ends a syllable on m; it never starts one. Alone in a message it is just a stray mark.

Text symbol

What ꩌ means

Use a Cham input method — iCham's Rumix types it as -M.

In running text it follows the base consonant and any medial or vowel signs; the font assembles the syllable. Any character map that covers the Cham block inserts it too.

What does ꩌ mean?

It writes a final m — the sound that closes a syllable. Cham is an abugida: consonant letters carry a built-in vowel, so a bare final consonant needs its own sign. For m that sign is ꩌ, attached to the syllable it closes — ꨌꩌ spells 'cham'.

The script descends from Brahmi through the Pallava tradition of South India. The Đông Yên Châu inscription, early writing in the Cham language, is commonly placed in the fourth century; one script reference gives 700 CE as the script's start. Later use spans inscriptions, religious manuscripts and everyday records.

What does it mean when someone sends you ꩌ?

Plain spelling — it only means a word ends on m. Unicode character data treats ꩌ as plain text, not an emoji; it carries no tone. Alone in a message it is a fragment — finals only work attached to a syllable.

You'll meet it mostly in Eastern Cham text from Vietnam, where the script stays in everyday use; Western Cham communities in Cambodia often write in an Arabic-based adaptation alongside it. Same mark, same coda m — only the writing around it changes.

Orthographic, not expressive — it marks Cham text or script study, never emoji tone.

A lone ꩌ is a fragment, not a word or a reaction.

Questions people ask

2

Is the dotted circle part of ꩌ?

No. The circle is a chart placeholder showing where the mark attaches; the character is only the small sign.

Why does ꩌ show as a hollow box?

A missing font. Most default fonts lack Cham; a Cham-capable font such as Noto Sans Cham displays it.
