What ꨯ means
It marks the o vowel on a Cham base.
Cham is a Brahmi-derived abugida: each consonant normally carries an unwritten vowel. ꨯ changes that inherent vowel to o, so it belongs with a consonant or vowel carrier in a syllable. Cham writing appears in inscriptions around the fifth century and was used for Sanskrit and Cham texts in the religious and political life of Champa, a historical Cham polity. From the fifteenth century onward, Cham manuscripts show a more cursive form than stone inscriptions.
As of 2026, Eastern Cham is more associated with Indic writing, while Western Cham commonly uses Arabic or Jawi writing. These are broader Cham writing traditions; ꨯ itself is a spelling sign within the Indic-derived script.
How do you type ꨯ correctly?
Type ꨯ after its base, though it renders on the left.
Cham stores this dependent vowel after the consonant it modifies, even when text shaping draws it before the consonant. Type the syllable in order: base consonant, any medial sign, then ꨯ. Entering characters by visual left-to-right position can put the sign in the wrong place.
A second vowel sign or a sign that lengthens the vowel can join it; parts of the syllable may then render above or to the right. If ꨯ is missing or misplaced, the font and shaping engine need to support Cham.
A technical spelling sign: it marks a vowel inside Cham text.
Alone, ꨯ is incomplete; it needs a Cham base to form a syllable.

1Why does ꨯ appear before the consonant?
Because Cham stores dependent vowels after their base consonant but shapes ꨯ on the left. The left-side placement is visual; the character sequence still starts with the base.
