What ㊢ means
It labels a copied document.
A ㊢ copy mark often appears near the top of a Japanese municipal notice.
At its center is 写, the Japanese character for copying or writing; the circle makes it a compact status mark.
What if someone sends ㊢ in chat?
Start with “copy,” its paperwork meaning.
If it arrives alone, ask the sender what they mean. It is a text character, not platform-specific emoji art: fonts can draw the circle and 写 with different proportions, and unsupported fonts or text encodings may show a missing glyph.
Formal Japanese paperwork; alone in chat, it may leave the recipient guessing.
If the reader must understand “copy,” state it in words.

1Questions people ask
1Why does ㊢ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Enclosed CJK Letters and Months block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
