As a lettered list marker, ⓔ identifies one item in a sequence. Enclosed Latin letters served as numbered or lettered bullets in legacy East Asian character sets.
Parenthesized forms such as “(e)” developed as typewriter stand-ins for circled labels. Rich-text formatting later took over much of that job, while ⓔ remains a single text character for an enclosed label.
