Fullwidth Latin Small Letter E

Fullwidth e is the ordinary lowercase letter e in a wider text form. A Japanese IME can type it in Full-width Alphanumeric mode; in a message, surrounding fullwidth letters usually show that the width is deliberate. Compatibility normalization can turn e into ordinary e.

What e means

Choose Full-width Alphanumeric in a Japanese IME. On Windows, as of 2026, Microsoft Japanese IME uses F9 for Full-width Alphanumeric and F10 for Half-width Alphanumeric.

The encoding history of fullwidth Latin letters includes Japan's JIS C 6226, later known as JIS X 0208, from 1978. It placed Latin letters in a character-set environment built to handle Japanese text alongside double-byte characters. The width convention helped align mixed-width text and supported conversion between legacy encodings; it did not give e a new sound. The ordinary e is its narrow compatibility counterpart.

What does e mean when someone sends it?

Read it as lowercase e; the width is the extra choice. Among fullwidth letters such as ABC or abc, it belongs to a fullwidth Latin run. If it appears by itself in ordinary text, it may come from input conversion, pasted text, or styling; the glyph alone does not establish a special tone.

Fullwidth describes a text-width convention, not an exact pixel measurement: the font and layout affect how wide it looks. NFKC and NFKD compatibility normalization can fold e to ordinary e. In a username or form value, the two characters may remain distinct until the receiving system applies its own rules.

Technical or typographic when a field requires it; a visual style choice in casual text.

Check a field's width rules: e and e may remain distinct before normalization.

Does NFKC change e to e?

Yes. NFKC and NFKD compatibility normalization turn this width form into ordinary e; use it only when losing the width distinction is acceptable.

Can e and e differ in a username or code?

Yes. A system comparing the raw characters can keep them distinct; compatibility normalization can fold them together. Follow the receiving field's rules.
