Fullwidth Latin Capital Letter E

37/225

E uses the same letter and sound as E but takes up a full East Asian text cell. It began as a spacing tool for mixed Latin and East Asian writing; fullwidth lettering later became a retro-internet cue in vaporwave-derived lofi titles. Software can distinguish it from E, though NFKC/NFKD normalization can fold it to ordinary E.

Text symbol

What E means

It gives a Latin letter the same grid width as surrounding CJK text.

Japan's JIS C 6220/JIS X 0201 text-encoding standard appeared in 1969; two-byte JIS X 0208 followed in 1978. Fullwidth Roman letters let Latin text line up in a two-cell East Asian grid, and Unicode retained them for round-trip conversion.

In Japanese vertical layout, fullwidth Latin letters can be spaced like Japanese characters, while ordinary E suits proportional Western words. E is a width choice, not a new letter or sound.

What does a wide E mean in a title?

In a stylized title, it signals deliberate retro-internet typography.

Fullwidth aesthetic text appears in vaporwave-derived lofi titles and comments, documented in 2024. There, a run like WELCOME keeps the word's spelling while changing its visual style.

For a name or ID, use ordinary E unless the field asks for fullwidth input. NFKC or NFKD normalization can fold E to E; a font may change its strokes without changing its width role.

In running text it signals layout; in a stylized title it signals retro-internet taste.

Use ordinary E in machine-facing IDs unless the field requests fullwidth input.

Drift: In one 2024 lofi-comment sample, individually spaced letters appeared less often in the later portion than the earlier one; that describes the sample, not all lofi use.

Questions people ask

1

Will a form accept E instead of E?

Only if its rules allow fullwidth input. Some Japanese admissions workflows request fullwidth alphanumeric input, documented in 2025; follow the field's stated width.
