Fullwidth Latin Capital Letter C

35/225

This is the Latin capital C in a fullwidth form, used when Latin text needs to fit an East Asian character-width slot. In decorative text, it can give a name a retro vaporwave look. NFKC normalization can turn it back into ordinary C.

What C means

Use fullwidth alphanumeric conversion in an input method. For how to type C, Microsoft's Japanese IME lets you type C, select it, and press F9; F10 converts the selection to halfwidth alphanumeric. Its guide was updated in 2024. Other input methods may call this setting Full-width Alphanumeric or zenkaku; shortcuts vary.

A fullwidth C keyboard shortcut depends on the input method. Adding spaces around C changes spacing, but does not make it this fullwidth character.

why does C look wide

It is a width-compatible form of C, not a different letter. JIS C 6226, later renamed JIS X 0208, dates to 1978. It provided a two-byte character set for Japanese text; the related JIS X 0201 standard included a single-byte Roman set. The two standards help explain why both narrow and fullwidth Roman forms were needed.

Unicode kept both forms so older mixed character sets could convert without losing their width distinction. The character encodes East Asian width semantics, but the font and layout determine how wide it actually appears.

In the early 2010s, vaporwave reused fullwidth strings as a retro East Asian computing cue. Japanese layout guidance favors proportional Western letters in horizontal text and generally discourages fullwidth Western letters used only for looks.

Useful in mixed East Asian text; conspicuously stylized in ordinary English text; risky in data entry.

Avoid it in URLs, code, or searchable names unless the field accepts compatibility characters.
