The toilet emoji and its corner: 🚽 🧻 🪠 💩
Toilet is the one people search for most, and the one most apps show when you type "bathroom". It has been in Unicode since version 6.0 (2010), when the Japanese carrier emoji were standardised, and every platform draws it the same way: a white, Western-style toilet seen from the side with the seat up. On its own it means exactly what it shows ("brb ", a bathroom break, a plumber's visit), and in jokes it stands for anything you want to flush: a bad take, a lost game, a Monday.
Roll of Paper arrived in 2018 and became famous in March 2020, when toilet paper vanished from shops and the emoji shot up the usage charts. Its official name is simply Roll of Paper, so it also does duty as paper towels or a tissue for a cold. Plunger (2020) is the fix for a blocked toilet or drain, which is why it also means "this is clogged, I'm sorting it out". Be aware that on TikTok and in flirty chats it picked up a suggestive second life, so the "plunger emoji meaning from a guy" searches are not about plumbing. Pile of Poo is the clown of the group: the smiling swirl is used far more for "that's crap", "I messed up" and silly affection than for an actual trip to the toilet.
Bath and shower emoji:
Shower is a shower head with water running, and it says "getting ready", "fresh start" or, in the shower thoughts sense, "a random idea I had". Bathtub is the empty tub, usually with a tap, and Person Taking Bath is someone sitting in it; the second one is the stronger "me time" signal and the one to use for a bubble bath or a long soak after a hard day. Pair either with Bubbles (2021), Soap (2018) and a rubber duck and the message is a bath night without a word.
The small things by the tub have their own emoji: Sponge, Lotion Bottle (which covers shampoo, body wash, sunscreen and hand sanitiser, since it is just a pump bottle) and the water itself, Droplet for a single drop and Sweat Droplets for a splash. is also one of the most widely used innuendo emoji, so in a bath combo keep it next to or where its meaning is obvious. Hot Springs and Person in Steamy Room cover the sauna, the steam room and the Japanese onsen, and Potable Water is the tap, drawn as a faucet filling a glass, with Non-Potable Water as its crossed-out warning twin.
Restroom signs and bathroom symbols:
The door signs are emoji too. Restroom shows the paired figures of a unisex toilet sign, Men's Room and Women's Room are the single figures, WC spells out the letters you see across Europe (short for water closet, the Victorian English term), and Baby Symbol is the baby-changing sign. All five came in with Unicode 6.0 and render as blue or green squares, which is why they look like real signage in a message: " second door on the left" needs no explanation.
If you need a plain text symbol for a toilet rather than a colour emoji, there are three: Negative Squared WC, which came from Japanese broadcasting character sets, and Boys Symbol and Girls Symbol, two restroom pictograms Unicode took over from the Wingdings fonts in 2014. They are text characters, not emoji, so they stay black-and-white and depend on the font, but they copy and paste like any other letter. There is no toilet emoji in ASCII art form worth recommending; the sign emoji are the closest thing to a toilet text symbol.
At the mirror and on cleaning day
The morning routine is covered one item at a time. Mirror, Toothbrush and Razor all arrived together in Unicode 13.0 (2020), the same release as Plunger and Bucket, which is why the bathroom suddenly felt complete that year. Tooth (2018) goes with the toothbrush for dentist appointments and lost baby teeth, Hair Pick (2022) is the comb, and Lipstick and Nail Polish are the two old 2010 emoji for getting ready, though is used far more often for "unbothered" sass than for an actual manicure.
For cleaning the bathroom, use Broom, Bucket, Sponge and Soap, with Basket for the laundry hamper, Wastebasket for the bin and Sparkles as the universal "spotless" sign. Microbe is the germ you are washing off; became a standard pairing for "wash your hands" in 2020. The unglamorous side is here too: Nauseated Face and Face Vomiting for a night spent next to the toilet, and Dashing Away, which is officially a puff of speed but is the universally understood fart emoji.
Missing from the set, in case you go looking: there is no sink or faucet emoji apart from the tap sign, no towel, no bidet, no hair dryer and no toilet brush. Type "toilet", "bath" or "soap" in the emoji keyboard search on iPhone or Android to find these quickly; on Slack, Discord and GitHub the shortcodes are :toilet:, :shower:, :bathtub:, :soap: and :poop:.

- exists because Google's Tokyo team insisted on it when Gmail got emoji in 2008. In Japan a golden poop is a good-luck charm: "un" is both the first syllable of unko (poo) and the word for luck, so a kin no unko (golden poo) is a pun you can carry on a keychain.
- A "frowning pile of poo" was proposed for Unicode in 2017 and dropped after typographers on the committee objected in writing to the direction emoji were taking, which is why the swirl only ever smiles.
- Hot Springs is the Japanese map symbol for an onsen and predates emoji: it entered Unicode in 1993 from Japanese character standards. In 2016 Japan's mapping agency introduced an alternative sign with bathers in it, after visitors kept reading the plain steam marks as a bowl of hot soup.
- The five bathroom items added together in 2020, Plunger, Toothbrush, Razor, Mirror and Bucket, came from a single push to fill the gaps in household emoji; Bubbles followed in 2021 and Hair Pick in 2022.
- , and are toilet signs that are text characters rather than emoji: came to Unicode from Japanese broadcast standards, and from the Wingdings fonts. They never get a colour picture, which makes them useful where emoji look out of place.
