Location & Map Emoji

Location emoji are the pins, maps and globes people use to say where they are: Round Pushpin in front of a city name, World Map, Compass and the globes . Below are all of them to copy and paste, the arrows laid out as a compass rose, the buildings and landmarks that name a place, and black-and-white location symbols such as for Word, résumés and bios.

The location emoji: what 📍 means and where it came from

Round Pushpin is the emoji everyone means by "location emoji". It has been in Unicode since version 6.0 (2010), and on every platform it is a red pin with a round head, the kind pushed into a paper map, not the teardrop marker of Google Maps. Put it in front of a place and the place becomes a location line: 📍 Lisbon, 📍 home, 📍 somewhere in the Alps. On its own it means "here" or "where are you?".

The teardrop marker it is often confused with was drawn by Jens Eilstrup Rasmussen for the launch of Google Maps in 2005. The Museum of Modern Art added the pin to its collection in 2014, and in 2020 it became the Google Maps logo itself. No emoji copies that shape, which is why is the universal stand-in.

Pushpin is the flat-headed cousin and means pinned: a pinned message in a group chat, a note on a corkboard, a saved spot. Bullseye says "right on the spot". is the Japanese "here" button, the katakana ココ (koko, "here") in a frame, and Placard (2020) works as the signpost emoji: 🪧 this way.

Map emoji: , the globes, and the compass rose

World Map (Unicode 7.0, 2014) is the emoji for maps, routes and plans; Map of Japan is the only emoji that maps a single country, inherited from Japanese phone emoji. Compass arrived in 2018 and means navigation, finding your way, or a "moral compass" when the talk turns figurative.

The three globes show the Earth from three sides: Europe and Africa, the Americas, Asia and Australia. People pick the one that shows their own part of the world, so a globe in a bio quietly tells readers which continent you are on. Globe with Meridians is the grid globe you see in browsers and language menus; it means the web or "international" rather than a place.

For directions, the eight arrow emoji work as a compass rose: north, east, south, west and the diagonals , which is how they are arranged in the symbol grid above with at the centre. Satellite and Satellite Antenna stand for GPS and tracking, for the Wi-Fi you are connected to.

Location symbol text: black-and-white marks for Word, résumés and bios

Colour emoji look out of place on a résumé or in a Word document, and many people search for a location symbol text version. Unicode has no plain pin, but these are close: Position Indicator (the crosshair of surveying and map software), a square version of it, bullseyes and target dots, and round and square targets. and are the astronomers' symbols for the Earth, is a house, and is the sign that marks a telephone on maps and buildings.

Place of Interest Sign is the symbol on Swedish and other Nordic road signs for a sight worth stopping at; Susan Kare took it from a symbol dictionary for the Apple command key in 1984, which is why most people know it from a keyboard. In Word on Windows you can type any of these by entering the code and pressing Alt X: 2316 then Alt X gives , 25CE gives , 2318 gives . Elsewhere, copy them from this page.

A hidden set of real map symbols lives in Unicode too: is the Japanese post office mark (the one on ), and lighthouse, historic site, castle, graveyard and bank came from the Japanese broadcasting standard ARIB STD-B24 in Unicode 5.2 (2009). Shinto Shrine is the torii gate that marks a shrine on Japanese maps.

Where I am: places, landmarks and the way there

After the pin comes the place. mean home, the office, school, the hospital, the hotel, the corner shop, the stadium, a church, mosque, synagogue or temple. Out of town, are the city, camping, the beach, the mountains and the park. A 📍🏖️ says "at the beach" with no words at all.

Some emoji name a city or country outright: is New York, Tokyo Tower (used for Paris too, since there is no Eiffel Tower emoji), Mount Fuji, Easter Island, a Japanese castle, Mecca. Fountain is the classic "meet me at the fountain" spot. For the full list of monuments and trips, see the Travel Emoji and City & Building Emoji collections.

The way there has its own icons: motorway, railway track, bus stop, station, fuel, roadworks, stop. and are walking and tracks, so 👣 on my way reads as "walking over now". Flags mark a spot: a flag on a post (though since the 2021 "red flag" trend it mostly means a warning sign in a person), the finish line, the hole on a golf course, and the text flags for a plain marker in a list.
