The Picard alphabet: Latin letters, Picard sounds

Picard (picard, in the north also ch’ti or ch’timi, around Valenciennes rouchi) is a Romance language of the langue d’oïl family, the close relative of French spoken in the far north of France and in the west of Belgian Hainaut. It is written in the Latin alphabet with the same 26 base letters as French; Feller-Carton also uses vowel signs such as å, æ and ŷ.

There is no single official spelling. Many writers follow a system adapted from the Walloon spelling of Jules Feller, others write Picard much as a French reader would expect it to look, and the Agence régionale de la langue picarde in Amiens works on shared conventions. They share the Latin alphabet, but spelling choices and apostrophe use vary.

K and W are ordinary letters in Picard. K writes a hard k where French has ch: kat (French chat, cat), kien (chien, dog), canchon (chanson, song), vaque (vache, cow). W keeps a Germanic w where French has g or gu, as in warder (French garder, to keep).

Picard letters and accents: é è ê, the circumflex and ch

The accents do the jobs a French reader knows: é marks a closed e, è an open one; in Feller-Carton, ê marks a long e that may be open or closed, and Picard uses à for “to” and dù for “where”. In Feller-style spelling the circumflex â ê î ô û marks a long vowel rather than a lost s. Capitals keep their accents: É, À, Ê.

The best-known Picard sound is ch where French has a soft c or ç: ch’est (c’est, it is), cha (ça, that), merchi (merci, thanks), garchon (garçon, boy). That is why ç is hardly needed in Picard and is not part of the set here. The same ch turns French ce into the demonstrative ch’ and chés, as in Ch’Nord (the Nord) and Chés Cabotans d’Amiens, the Amiens puppet theatre. The pronouns mi and ti stand where French has moi and toi.

Picard punctuation: the apostrophe of Ch’ti, and « » quotes

Picard drops vowels before other words far more than French, and some writers use apostrophes to mark elision: ch’, j’, m’, t’, l’, d’, and the name Ch’ti itself. The typographic apostrophe ’ is the one used in print; the straight apostrophe ' from a keyboard is accepted online, but mixing both in one text looks careless.

Quotations follow French typography: guillemets « » with a space inside them, and “ ” for quotes inside quotes. Question and exclamation marks are also preceded by a space in French-style typesetting: Cha va ?

Where Picard is spoken, and how it relates to French and Walloon

Picard is spoken across Hauts-de-France, the region made of the former Picardy and Nord-Pas-de-Calais, from Amiens and Beauvais to Lille, Arras and Valenciennes, and in Belgium in western Hainaut around Tournai and Mouscron. CLDR estimates around 750,000 speakers, counted in France ; Belgium adds more, and the French Community of Belgium recognised Picard as a regional language in 1990. In France it is one of the regional languages, with no official status. Both countries pay in euros: 5 .

Picard sits between French and Walloon: its spelling looks French, its sounds often line up with Walloon, and Walloon speakers in eastern Hainaut and Liège are its neighbours. For the full French set with ç, ë, ï, œ and ÿ see the French letters collection; for the letters of the neighbouring language see Walloon; for the flag and symbols of the countries see France and Belgium.

How to use them

Learners and writers of Picard
Copy é è ê and the circumflex vowels for texts in Picard, and keep the apostrophe as ’ in ch’, j’ and l’. K and W are ordinary letters here: kat, kien, warder.
Fans of Ch’ti and Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis
Ch’ti, ch’est, merchi and biloute are written with a real apostrophe and a plain ch. The film title uses the same ’: Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis.
Estaminets, menus and posters in the Nord
Picard on a chalkboard reads like home: Merchi bien, Ch’est bon, Bojour. Put the euro after the price with a space, 4 , as in France and Belgium.
Local history, songs and place names
Song titles such as L’canchon dormoire and names of societies, puppet theatres and festivals keep their apostrophes and accents; copy them rather than dropping the marks.
Posting about the Nord and Picardy
There is no emoji flag for Hauts-de-France or Hainaut, so people write Ch’Nord with , or for the whole Picard area, and add or .

ควรรู้

  • Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis (2008) sold over 20 million cinema tickets in France and made the word Ch’ti known across the country; it plays on the Picard of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais.
  • The name Ch’timi is usually traced to soldiers of the First World War, who nicknamed their northern comrades after the way they said ch’est ti, ch’est mi (it’s you, it’s me).
  • Le P’tit Quinquin, a lullaby written in the Picard of Lille by Alexandre Desrousseaux in 1853, is still sung as the unofficial anthem of Lille.
  • Picard often keeps a hard k where French moved on to ch, so the Picard words kat, kien and canchon sound closer to Latin cattus, canis and cantio than French chat, chien and chanson do.
