Belgium flag emoji 🇧🇪 and the Belgian colours

The Belgium flag emoji shows three vertical bands, black, yellow and red. The colours come from the arms of the old Duchy of Brabant, a gold lion on a black shield with red claws and tongue, and the vertical layout has been used since 1831. The official flag is almost square (13:15), but the emoji is drawn in the usual flag shape.

Copy it anyway: whoever receives it on a phone sees the flag.

Don't mix it up with Germany , which has the same black and red but in horizontal stripes and with gold. If you need the colours without the flag, hearts or squares rebuild it in any app, and the EU flag fits naturally next to it: Brussels is home to the European Commission and the Council of the EU, as well as NATO's headquarters.
