Voting & Election Emoji

Voting emoji are the pictures people post on election day and in polls: Ballot Box, and for a vote cast, for the inked finger, for the campaign and for the count. This page has all of them plus the plain-text ballot box symbols , ready-made election emoji combos and the reactions used for polls on WhatsApp, Discord and Slack.

The voting emoji everyone uses: 🗳️ ✅ ☑️ and the ballot box symbols

Ballot Box with Ballot is the one voting emoji in the proper sense: a box with a slot and a folded paper going in. It joined Unicode 7.0 in 2014, in the batch that turned old Wingdings and Webdings pictures into characters, and every platform draws it the same way, a grey or blue box with a sheet half-posted. On its own it says "vote", "election" or "poll"; with a date next to it, it is a reminder to go and vote.

The marks you make on a ballot come as emoji and as text. Check Mark Button and Check Box with Check read as "voted" or "approved"; Cross Mark is the vote against, and in Britain, Australia and many other countries the cross is the mark you actually draw on the paper, so can mean "chosen" as easily as "rejected". The text versions (ballot box, ballot box with check, ballot box with x) have been in Unicode since 1993 and their official names are literally ballot boxes. are the plain tick and ballot x, the heavy ones, and are the bolder and handwritten styles that came over from Wingdings. For every weight and colour of tick see Check Mark Symbols; this page keeps the ones a ballot needs.

Election emoji for every stage: campaign, polling day, count and result

A campaign is noise and signs: Megaphone and Loudspeaker for the message, Speaking Head for the speech, Placard (added in 2020) for the rally and the picket line, Raised Fist for the movement, for the candidate in a suit and for the ribbon or pin of a cause. Debate night is between two Studio Microphones, with and for the calm and the heated exchange; the coverage is .

Polling day has its own set. Classical Building stands for the town hall, parliament or capitol, School for the gym where most people actually vote, for "your polling station" and for the date and the hour the polls close. At the desk you show or , take your ballot paper, mark it with (pencils are still standard in UK polling booths) or , and in many US states fill the oval completely, which is what stand in for. Postal votes travel as and come back through the post office.

Then the count: Bar Chart is the result graphic, the swing, and the tally, the recount or the scrutiny of a close race, the long night. The ending is for the winner, for the finish of the race, for the concession and for accepting the result or forming a coalition. and are for the courts, which is where disputed elections end up.

Vote emoji finger, I voted stickers and election day customs

The search for a vote emoji finger comes mostly from India, where a polling officer paints a line of indelible ink on the voter's left forefinger. Showing the inked finger is the Indian "I voted" photo, and Index Pointing Up is the emoji for it: is the standard caption. Writing Hand covers marking the ballot and points to "vote here" or to a link. Index Pointing at You, added in 2021, is the recruiting-poster gesture: your vote, your turn.

In the United States polling places hand out an "I Voted" sticker, so the I voted emoji people look for is really a sticker emoji: Name Badge and Label are the closest, usually written as or I voted. Australians queue for a sausage sandwich at the polling-place fundraiser, the "democracy sausage", so is an Australian election-day post. Party symbols are a custom of their own: and for the US Republican and Democratic parties, and on Indian ballots and voting machines every party has an official picture, among them the hand, the lotus, the elephant, the bicycle, the broom and the hammer and sickle.

Poll emoji for WhatsApp, Discord, Slack and Instagram

WhatsApp, Telegram and Discord all have built-in polls now, but the emoji way is still faster in a group chat: post the question and ask people to react. is the yes/no poll, the done/not-done or in/out poll, for numbered options and or for lettered ones. Discord poll bots use exactly these: the regional-indicator letters are what a bot adds under each option. are the upvote and downvote of Reddit-style voting, the small variant.

Instagram Stories have a poll sticker and a slider, so there the voting emoji goes in the caption rather than the answers: Vote now, Poll closes tonight, Results. On Slack, react with to RSVP and to mark a decision thread; the shortcodes are :ballot_box_with_ballot: on Slack and :ballot_box: on Discord, and :ballot_box_with_check: gives on both. For class or club elections are the set: raise a hand to nominate, tick the clipboard to vote.

How to type the ballot box emoji and the symbols

On an iPhone or Android, open the emoji keyboard and search "ballot" or "vote" for ; "check" finds . On Windows press Win . (period) and search the same words; on a Mac press Control Command Space. The plain-text boxes are not on any emoji keyboard, so copy them from this page or type their codes: in Word, type 2610 then Alt X for , 2611 for and 2612 for ; the Wingdings font has the same three at character codes 168, 254 and 253.

In a plain-text list the three boxes make a ballot that works anywhere, even in a filename or a code comment: ☐ Alex ☑ Sam ☐ Priya. In Google Sheets or Excel, =UNICHAR(9745) returns and =UNICHAR(9744) , which is handy for a tally sheet. The ballot box emoji itself is U1F5F3 followed by the variation selector UFE0F; without the selector some fonts show it as a small black-and-white glyph rather than the coloured emoji.
