Combining Cedilla

To enter the cedilla mark by itself, use character or code input; to modify a letter, type it after the base. It builds letters such as ç from separate characters. Some fonts draw it like a comma below, so shape alone cannot identify the mark.

What ̧ means

Use character or code input to insert it alone.

To modify a letter, enter the base first and this mark immediately after it. The mark attaches to the preceding character; entered alone, it may look detached.

In Windows Word, enter 0327 and press Alt+X; GNOME uses Ctrl+Shift+U, then 0327, then Space or Enter. On macOS, search by name or code in Character Viewer.

What does the cedilla mark do?

It places a cedilla-like mark under the preceding letter.

A c followed by this mark can render as ç. Unicode normalization can combine that sequence into the precomposed letter, so identical-looking text may contain different character sequences.

In medieval handwriting, a small z written beneath c came to mark a changed consonant while keeping the inherited c. A study of Provençal charters describes this development; Provençal is a Romance language of southern France. Another account places established use in the 13th century but leaves its Iberian, French, or Provençal route unsettled. Castilian Spanish later dropped ç as its sibilant sounds changed; Portuguese and Catalan kept it. French printer Geoffroy Tory adopted the sign from Spanish in 1529.

Technical and orthographic: this mark belongs inside multilingual text, not as decoration.

If it appears under the wrong character, reinsert it after the intended base.

After c in French, Portuguese, or Catalan text
It forms c-cedilla; in French, ç keeps c sounding like s before a, o, or u.
After s in Turkish text
This is the decomposed form of Turkish ş; Turkish spelling uses the cedilla.
After s or t in Romanian text
Romanian letters ș and ț use comma below; some legacy text substitutes a cedilla.

Questions people ask

Why does the cedilla sometimes look like a comma?

Some fonts do: they draw the mark with a comma-like tail. Romanian comma-below is a separate mark, so shape alone cannot tell you which character the text uses.
