What ̶ means
Follow each letter with ̶.
For a plain text strikethrough, write s̶t̶r̶i̶k̶e̶: each letter takes its own mark, so one at the end crosses only the final letter.
Native strikethrough formatting is easier to revise in long passages because it avoids adding a separate mark after every letter.
Did strikethrough start in manuscripts?
Crossing-out predates digital text.
In medieval and early-modern manuscripts, a line through words could mark deletion or correction. In digital transcription, editors can preserve readable wording while marking it as deleted, carrying that editorial distinction into digital text.
That history explains why a strike-through reads as removal; it does not show that this exact encoded character was copied from an old manuscript sign.
What does struck-through text mean?
It marks a word as deleted or corrected.
In a message, read the surrounding sentence to tell whether the sender is correcting wording or showing what they take back.
The letters remain under the line, so this signals removal rather than concealment.
A plain-text mark of deletion or correction; the crossed-out letters remain legible.
It does not erase or hide the letters.

1Questions people ask
2Why does my combining strikethrough look uneven?
Font and text-engine rendering. The mark is intended to join across neighboring letters, but fonts can leave gaps or align the line unevenly.
Does strikethrough erase the letters?
No. The letters remain underneath, so this is a visible deletion mark, not redaction.
