What 𒂍 means
It writes e₂, the Sumerian word for “house.” A temple was a deity’s house, so the sign appears in temple and institution names.
An ancestor labeled E₂/ZATU129 appears in Late Uruk proto-cuneiform, an early stage of cuneiform writing, around 3200 BCE, in records tracking goods and administration. A 2024 study gives three readings of its image: a temple façade, a loom, or an ambiguous link between weaving and important households.
Unicode 18.0’s reference shapes mainly follow Ur III, a period in Mesopotamian history; cuneiform fonts for other periods can draw the sign differently.
