cypriot syllable su

Cypriot Syllable Su

𐠬 is a Cypriot syllabary sign for the syllable su, the sound s followed by u; it contributes a sound inside a word rather than naming an idea. Ancient Cypriots used the script for Greek and sometimes Eteocypriot. It developed from Cypro-Minoan and later gave way to Greek alphabetic writing. Lines usually run right to left, but inscriptions from Paphos can run left to right.

What 𐠬 means

It marks the syllable su inside a word.

The Cypriot syllabary writes words in syllables; many signs combine a consonant and vowel. 𐠬 represents “su,” with s followed by the u sound. Signs together form a word, so this one does not name an object or idea alone.

Ancient Cypriots used it mainly for their Greek dialect; some inscriptions also record Eteocypriot, a distinct local language. In 1994, an inscription study by Masson identified a text at Palaepaphos-Skales in Cyprus as the earliest known Cypriot syllabic inscription, dated to the 11th century BCE. Surviving inscriptions span the 8th to the 3rd or 2nd century BCE. The script is generally traced to Cypro-Minoan, a Cypriot writing system of the late Bronze Age. Its use declined in the second half of the 4th century BCE and ended in the Hellenistic period as alphabetic Greek took over.

What does 𐠬 mean when someone sends it?

Alone, it is a sample of a syllabic sign.

Sent alone, it gives a syllable but not a whole word or the sender’s intent. In an inscription, neighboring signs complete the word. Eteocypriot signs can be transliterated (written with approximate sound values), but the language remains undeciphered as of 2026.

Why can Cypriot writing run in either direction?

Usually right to left; Paphian inscriptions can run left to right.

Cypriot lines usually run right to left. Inscriptions from Paphos, called Paphian, are a known left-to-right exception. Unicode gives the script right-to-left (RTL) directionality, so a line mixed with Latin text can display in an unexpected order; an editor that supports right-to-left writing helps when order matters.

It belongs in discussions of ancient writing; alone in chat, it reads as a specimen rather than a word.

Alone, 𐠬 gives one syllable, not a whole word or reaction.

Why does 𐠬 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
