What 𞁥 means
In Cyrillic transcription, it can label a phonological category. That is a sound pattern in a language, rather than fine pronunciation detail. An archiphoneme groups sounds that merge in a certain position; the transcription key gives the exact reading.
Aleksandar Belić’s 1905 study of eastern and southern Serbian dialects uses subscript ъ to mark the back yer coloring of ь. A yer is a very short Slavic vowel; in Russian spelling, baseline ъ serves as a hard sign. A 2021 proposal to encode these modifiers cites Belić’s example.
Specialist notation; the transcription key supplies its exact reading.
