What 🄉 means
It represents 8 followed by a comma.
Unicode’s 2008 proposal maps ARIB code 9240 to 🄉 in Japan’s broadcast character set. ARIB STD-B24 codes digital-broadcast data and text. The proposal sought shared Unicode assignments for symbols previously kept in private-use font slots. It extends the older enclosed form ⒏ (8 plus a full stop) to a comma.
Why can 🄉 become 8,?
NFKC expands it.
NFKC is Unicode’s compatibility cleanup: it changes 🄉 to ordinary 8 plus ,. The normalized text no longer contains the original single character.
Why do fonts draw 🄉 differently?
Unicode does not require one exact drawing.
Its chart glyph is a reference; typefaces may draw it differently.
Questions people ask
1Why does 🄉 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
