Comma

A comma separates items or parts within a sentence without ending it. In English it organises lists, introductory phrases and extra information; the Oxford comma, or serial comma, is the optional last comma before “and” in a list of three or more. Many languages also use it as the decimal separator: 3,5 means three and a half.

What , means

Separate list items and set off extra information. In English, put a comma after many introductory phrases and before “and” or “but” joining two complete sentences.

Commas around a description mark it as extra. Leave them out when the description tells you which person or thing is meant.

In formal English, follow your style guide’s list punctuation, but keep commas needed for clarity.

In formal English, a comma alone cannot join two complete sentences.
