What 𑑍 means
It separates phrases in Newa writing. It marks a break inside a sentence, not the sentence's end.
The Newa script, also called Nepal Lipi, descends from Brahmi through northern Gupta, an intermediate script form. The earliest recorded evidence for the Newa script is a 908 CE manuscript of a Buddhist text called the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra. The comma also appears in inscriptions and manuscripts.
Newa has script-family links to Devanagari, Bengali, and Tirhuta. Bhujinmol and Ranjana are historically related forms in the Newar writing tradition.
Why can the boundary shift in manuscripts?
Some Newar manuscripts use similar marks between words. Manuscript punctuation varies: short marks resembling half-dandas, a kind of Newa punctuation, can separate words rather than phrases. Read the surrounding text to judge how fine the break is.
This is script-specific Newa punctuation, for writing or reading Newa text.
It is not a drop-in replacement for an ordinary comma.
