What ٫ means
On the standard Persian layout, use Shift3. A Persian typography note from 2020 documents that shortcut. A Unicode internationalization discussion in 2016 reported that some layouts lacked the mark and writers substituted commas. If there is no key for it, your operating system’s character picker or Unicode input method may offer another route.
What does this Arabic number mark mean?
It separates the whole-number part from the fractional part. In ١٢٫٥ and Persian-style ۱۲٫۵, both meaning 12.5, it marks the decimal break. Its paired sign ٬ groups thousands instead.
Al-Uqlidisi’s arithmetic treatise, written in Damascus in 952–53, is the earliest surviving Arabic work with direct treatment of decimal fractions; its surviving manuscript copy was made in 1157. He adapted dust-board calculation, where digits could be erased and rearranged, for pen and paper, using a marked separator to keep the fractional place clear. This is an early functional precedent, not proof that the handwritten mark had the modern glyph’s exact shape.
Arabic-script digits keep a left-to-right order inside right-to-left text. Punctuation around a number may appear on a side you do not expect.
Numeric punctuation for the boundary between whole and fractional parts.
The thousands mark ٬ groups digits; ٫ starts the fractional part.
