Where did Arabic-Indic numerals come from?
They developed from Indian decimal numerals and spread through Arabic mathematical writing.
The wider decimal system has Indian origins around the middle of the first millennium CE. In 662 CE, Severus Sebokht described Indian calculation with nine signs; in 776 CE, an Indian astronomical work was ordered translated into Arabic for al-Mansur’s court.
Place value—where a digit’s position sets its value—made written calculation more manageable. Early calculations used a board covered with dust; al-Uqlidisi’s tenth-century book adapted the method for pen and paper. In the eleventh-century Arabic world, these numerals coexisted with finger reckoning and alphabetic numerals.
Why do digits stay in order in Arabic text?
Digits in a number keep their numeric order even inside right-to-left writing.
Arabic runs right to left, but the digits in a number keep their usual order. When Arabic, Latin text, and punctuation mix, bidirectional layout—the rule that arranges both writing directions together—can shift what appears where even though stored characters stay in typed order. Fonts can draw ٩ differently, but it still means nine.
As of 2026, Arabic-script conventions use ٩ with Arabic, while Persian, Urdu, and Sindhi use the distinct Eastern Arabic-Indic form ۹. Western 9 is also used in parts of the Arabic-speaking world and widely elsewhere.
Neutral and functional: ٩ marks a number; the surrounding message supplies any conversational tone.
As of 2026, Persian, Urdu, and Sindhi text may expect ۹.
