What 𐴹 means
It is the Hanifi Rohingya digit for nine. In a calculation or written number, it has the ordinary decimal value nine.
Hanifi Rohingya is a modern script developed by Maulana Mohammed Hanif and others for writing Rohingya. Its forms were modeled on Arabic writing, but it is not a descendant of Arabic script. The Unicode proposal includes a script chart dated 1980 and reproduces digits from a handwritten primer and a primary-school arithmetic book.
The script was designed as an alphabet shaped for Rohingya sounds and as a focus for written community identity. Its addition to Unicode in 2018 was a computer-encoding milestone, not the birth of the script.
Why do Hanifi Rohingya numbers go left to right?
The digits keep left-to-right order. Rohingya text runs right to left, but its numbers do not reverse with it. For example, 𐴱𐴹 reads as 19: one followed by nine. Direction-aware software preserves that order inside right-to-left text.
Why does 𐴹 appear as a box?
The device likely lacks a Hanifi Rohingya font. Unicode identifies the character, but a font has to draw it. As of 2026, RohingyaLanguage.org's online keyboard FAQ says missing font coverage can make Hanifi Rohingya characters appear as boxes. Its Hanifi virtual keyboard includes a digit row; the viewing device still needs a compatible font.
Neutral number notation; in Hanifi Rohingya text, it keeps its numeric value.
A blank box can hide the nine from someone whose device lacks the font.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𐴹 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
