What ٨ means
Arabic 8 and European 8 are different written forms.
Persian and Urdu use ۸, a distinct form for the same value.
Indian decimal numerals spread into the Arabic world. The Brahmi numerals that preceded them appear in inscriptions from around the middle of the third century BCE; Brahmi itself was not a place-value system. Arabic forms later split into eastern and western branches. The oldest known written example of the eastern branch, “260” on an Egyptian papyrus, may date to 873–874 CE. A mathematical manuscript by al-Sijzi in Shiraz dates to 969–972. Western forms evolved into European 8.
