Arabic-Indic seven belongs to a numeral tradition transmitted from India and adapted in Arabic-speaking scholarly centers. A report by Severus Sebokht in 662 is an early witness to Indian calculation with nine numeral signs reaching lands later connected with the Arabic world; another report places an Indian astronomy text translated into Arabic in 776. These dates trace the system's transmission, not the origin of this exact shape.

Place value lets a digit's position change its value, making written calculation practical. In the tenth century, mathematician al-Uqlidisi adapted dust-board calculation—a surface where numerals could be moved—for pen and paper. Eastern manuscript copies dated 969 and 1082 show the written forms changing. The value seven persisted as regional shapes diverged.
