What ߇ means
Press 7 on Keyman’s N’Ko 1.3.1 layout.
The Keyman 1.3.1 guide maps the 7 key directly to ߇. On another device, select an N’Ko keyboard layout that includes the digit; the Latin digit 7 is a different character.
What does ߇ mean in N’Ko?
It represents the quantity seven.
The N’Ko writing system was created to write Manding languages in their own forms, including their tones. Its emergence is commonly dated to 14 April 1949 in Bingerville, Côte d’Ivoire, after a longer design process; earlier Arabic- and Latin-based writing attempts were considered a poorer fit.
N’Ko developed alongside Ajami writing, which uses Arabic script for local languages, but it is a distinct, created script outside Arabic and Latin.
Why do N’Ko numbers run right to left?
N’Ko numbers follow the script’s direction.
Under Unicode’s N’Ko numeral rules, the most significant digit is stored first and displayed at the right edge. A multi-digit N’Ko number therefore runs right to left.
In mixed text, the number can land in the wrong place if the surrounding text lacks a right-to-left base direction. Set the paragraph or text run to right-to-left; a display-order problem does not change ߇’s value.
߇ is ordinary number notation in N’Ko; N’Ko literacy has also been linked to Manding cultural identity (2019).
Outside N’Ko context, readers may not recognize which number ߇ represents.

1Why does ߇ show as a box?
A font without N’Ko coverage may show a box instead of the character. Use an N’Ko font that includes the glyph; the box is a missing character, not another numeral.
