What ߅ means
It means five in N’Ko’s decimal numeral system.
N’Ko was developed by Solomana Kantè in Bingerville, Côte d’Ivoire, in 1949, after his earlier experiments with Arabic and Latin scripts for Manding, a group of West African languages.
His writing system aimed to represent Manding vowel and tone distinctions and support local-language literacy. Its historical setting connects it with West African Ajami: writing African languages with Arabic script.
Why do N’Ko numbers read right to left?
They follow N’Ko’s right-to-left direction, with the highest-value digit on the right.
The sequence ߁߅ has the value 15: in N’Ko’s display, ߁, the higher-value digit, appears on the right. This differs from Arabic and Hebrew numeral layouts inside right-to-left text.
For the ordinal “fifth” (a number that gives rank), add the combining mark ߲ after the digit: ߅߲. The mark changes the number’s grammatical role, not its value.
How do I type ߅?
Use an N’Ko keyboard or Unicode input.
A Unicode-aware editor can insert U+07C5; a native N’Ko layout puts the script’s characters directly on keys.
߅ places a number in the N’Ko numeral system; sent alone, read it literally as five.
In a Latin-script message, readers may not expect N’Ko digits; use 5 when that script context is unclear.
