What ۸ means
It means eight. It belongs to the Eastern Arabic-Indic set; ٨ and 8 share its value but are separate characters. Changing fonts changes their drawings, not their identities.
The decimal place-value system, where a digit’s position sets its value, developed in India and reached Arabic scholarship through astronomy. In 776, a visitor from India presented astronomical calculations to Abbasid ruler al-Mansur; around 825, mathematician al-Khwarizmi wrote on Indian numerals. By the mid-tenth century, al-Uqlidisi praised the method as quick and adapted calculations from a dust-covered board to pen and paper. Later Latin versions carried it west. This traces the system, not ۸’s exact modern shape.

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
