Text symbol

What ፤ means

It joins related clauses without ending the sentence.

Ethiopic writing is used for languages such as Amharic and Tigrinya. Tigrinya punctuation guidance calls ፤ a sentence connector; a style-guide proposal also uses it between list items that already contain commas.

In Ethiopia and Eritrea, the earliest writing evidence is pseudo-Sabaean inscriptions—local writing modeled on South Arabian script—from the 8th/7th centuries BCE. The recognizable Ethiopic script appears as an abjad (a system that records consonants) in the 1st–3rd centuries CE; it becomes an abugida (where each basic sign combines a consonant and vowel) in the 4th century. Earlier Ethiopic writing divided words with a vertical bar. Geʽez, the classical language written in this script, later developed its own punctuation, including ፤. The script is historically related to South Arabian writing; Greek influence is proposed for some later changes.

How is ፤ different from ፣, ፥, or ።?

The marks have different jobs; ፤ keeps connected text open.

፣ is the Ethiopic comma, used for ordinary list items in the style-guide proposal. ፥ is called an Ethiopic colon, but Tigrinya punctuation guidance uses it as a list separator. ። is the Ethiopic full stop.

Different languages and editorial traditions can give neighboring marks different jobs.

How do I type ፤?

Choose an Ethiopic keyboard layout with punctuation access.

On the GFF Amharic 3.2 layout for Keyman, pressing ; enters ፤. Some punctuation requires repeated presses to cycle through choices.

Font designs can change the mark’s weight or shape beside Ethiopic and Latin text. Its punctuation role stays the same.

Formal punctuation; its clause and list roles depend on language and editorial style.

Do not treat ፤ as a sentence ending; ። marks the full stop.
