What ⓸ means
In Word for Windows, type 24F8, then press AltX.
A character browser can also find it: search “double circled” and choose the four with two rings.
Where have double-circled numbers been used?
A 1999 Japanese Standards Association proposal describes dental and publishing uses.
It says double-circled digits through eight marked tooth positions in Japanese dental notation. It also connects enclosed numbers with marks used in publications, newspapers, and machine-readable laws.
⓸ still means four; the rings give it a distinct visual role in lists or diagrams when a plain 4 or single-circled ④ would not stand out.
Why can ⓸ look different across documents?
Its appearance depends on the selected font and its character coverage.
A font with support may draw the two rings cleanly; one without it may show a substitute or empty box. Check the target document’s font and exported file when exact layout matters.
Technical, editorial, or decorative; conspicuous in ordinary prose.
The extra ring changes the marking style, not the number.

2Does ⓸ mean a different number?
No. It still stands for four; the two rings mark a visual style, not a new quantity.
Will ⓸ display in every font?
Not always. A font without a glyph may substitute another character or show an empty box. Check the target font and exported document if appearance matters.
