Equal to or precedes

223/256

⋞ means “equal to or precedes” in mathematical notation. It says that one item is either the same as another or comes before it in a specified ordering. “Before” need not mean earlier in time or smaller in value, so ⋞ is not a general replacement for .

Text symbol

What ⋞ means

Read it as “equal to or precedes.” In a ⋞ b, the item a equals b or comes before b in the ordering being used. Equality is allowed: the sign does not require a to come strictly before b.

An ordering is a rule for deciding which items come before others. It can apply to mathematical objects, not just numbers. The sign combines an equality mark with a curved precedence mark; the definition accompanying the formula tells you which ordering is intended.
