What 🇲🇶 means
It usually points to Martinique or a Martinican connection.
Use it for a trip, hometown, family tie, carnival, zouk night, dish, or team linked to Martinique and Fort-de-France. Alone it names the place; it does not declare a position on French or independence politics.
Read the caption first. “Back home 🇲🇶” is identity, a beach plus 🇲🇶 is a travel tag.
Why does the Martinique emoji look like a snake flag?
Older artwork showed Martinique's historic snake design.
That blue field with white cross and snakes survives in old screenshots, but it carries weight. Martinique's flag choice was still publicly contested in 2023, with reporting describing the French tricolor on official buildings, a red-green-black independence banner, and a public selection process. Some readers link the snake emblem to colonial slavery, so do not use that version as a light party badge.
Why does Martinique flag emoji look different on my phone?
Vendors pick the picture, so phones disagree.
As of 2026, Apple, Google, Samsung, and Facebook use the newer Ipséité design according to Emojipedia. Older systems, sites, or screenshots may still show the snake flag or the letters MQ.
The code still means the same Martinique sequence. Copy it from the palette above, then add “Martinique” if the picture is doing the work.
Warm and regional for travel, family, culture and sport; tense when the old artwork or flag politics takes over.

4Worth knowing
- The characters behind 🇲🇶 existed in Unicode 5 years before anyone was allowed to draw them in colour: Unicode 6.0 in 2010, emoji presentation in 2015.
- 🇲🇶 is not one character. It is 2 of them glued together, which is why deleting it sometimes takes two presses of backspace and why it breaks character counters.
Questions people ask
2is this the Quebec flag emoji
In practice, yes, among some Quebec users — but its identity is Martinique. They adopted it because no dedicated Quebec flag emoji exists. Add “Quebec” so nobody has to guess.
Is the snake design safe to use for Martinique?
Not for everyone. Some readers tie the historic snake emblem to colonial slavery; others see only older artwork. Avoid it as decoration and name Martinique in words.
