What ๐ธ๐ฑ means
A former British colony whose capital was founded for freed slaves. Sierra Leone sits between Guinea and Liberia on the Atlantic. Its name comes from Portuguese sailors in the 1400s, who called the hills around the coast Serra Leoa, the Lion Mountains. In the late 1700s British abolitionists settled freed and escaped slaves on that coast, and the settlement became Freetown, still the capital today. The country became independent from Britain on 27 April 1961 and adopted this flag the same day.
The stripes are usually explained like this: green for agriculture, mountains and natural resources; white for unity and justice; blue for the Atlantic and Freetownโs natural harbour, one of the largest in the world. English is the official language, but the everyday lingua franca is Krio, an English-based creole, and in Krio the country is Salone.
Many people abroad first heard of Sierra Leone through hard news: the civil war of 1991โ2002, the โblood diamondsโ that funded it, and the Ebola epidemic of 2014โ2016. Sierra Leoneans posting the flag are rarely talking about any of that. They are far more likely to be celebrating Independence Day, a wedding, a plate of cassava leaves or jollof rice, or a goal by the Leone Stars, the national football team.
What does ๐ธ๐ฑ mean when someone sends it?
It points to Sierra Leone; the rest of the message tells you how. In a profile name or bio it is a badge of heritage: Sierra Leoneans in Britain, the United States and across West Africa use it to say where they or their parents come from, often next to the flag of the country they live in. By itself it does not prove nationality, only a connection the sender feels.
Around 27 April, timelines fill with ๐ธ๐ฑ for Independence Day, usually with green, white and blue hearts. During the Africa Cup of Nations or World Cup qualifiers it means the Leone Stars are playing. In travel photos or news posts it simply labels the country. There is no sarcastic or coded reading; if someone sends it to you, they are proud of or interested in Sierra Leone, and a warm reply is the right one.
Warm and proud when personal, plainly neutral when it labels a place; never mocking.
Replying with references to war, diamonds or Ebola to someoneโs celebratory flag reads as rude and dated.

8Worth knowing
- Sierra Leone adopted this flag on 27 April 1961, the day it became independent from Britain. Independence Day is still the biggest date for the flag online.
- Freetown began in the late 1700s as a settlement for freed slaves; Krio, the creole language spoken by most Sierra Leoneans today, grew out of that community.
Questions people ask
3Why do I see SL instead of a flag?
Because flag emoji are built from two letter symbols, here S and L, Sierra Leoneโs country code. As of 2026, devices and apps without flag support, including Windows in many fonts, show the two letters instead of the flag.
What does Salone mean?
It is the Krio name for Sierra Leone, used by Sierra Leoneans at home and abroad. โSalone ๐ธ๐ฑโ in a bio or caption is the same as writing the countryโs name.
Is ๐ธ๐ฑ also used for anything other than the country?
No. It has no slang meaning; it refers to Sierra Leone, its people, its teams and its national days.
