What ⪥ means
Not by itself. A 2009 MathML 3 draft, a web format for mathematical expressions, lists ⪥ as infix: it sits between expressions. This gives its position in a formula, not the relation the writer intends.
Why was ⪥ proposed for encoding?
It was part of shared math-symbol encoding work. A 2000 ISO/IEC 10646 proposal, an international standard for encoding characters, included ⪥ among additional relation signs. The proposal grew from the STIX Project's work on shared symbols and fonts for scientific and technical publishing. This dates the encoding, not the sign's first use.
Questions people ask
1Why does ⪥ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
