ᄌ

halfwidth hangul letter cieuc

Halfwidth Hangul Cieuc

184/225

ᄌ is a narrow compatibility form of ㅈ, a Korean consonant. It belongs to older mixed-width text encoding, not ordinary Korean spelling; Korean input normally makes syllable blocks, and this exact form may be hard to type or display.

Text symbol

What ᄌ means

It represents ㅈ, the Korean consonant cieuc.

The narrow width marks a compatibility form used for older mixed-width text systems. Those systems gave some characters narrower spaces, and Unicode retained the forms so older text could be represented. The width changes; the consonant it represents does not.

The standards trail includes a nearly identical Xerox set associated with the 1982 standard, followed by 7-bit Korean Jamo material in KS C 5601 / KS X 1001 from 1987 onward. These are encoding standards: rules for representing text in older systems.

Unlike the ordinary compatibility Jamo ㅈ, ᄌ cannot join with a vowel to form a Hangul syllable block. The conjoining leading Jamo ᄌ can take part in that composition.

Can I type ᄌ with a Korean keyboard?

Usually not through ordinary Korean syllable input.

Korean input normally combines consonants and vowels into syllable blocks instead of entering this exact halfwidth character. A 2017 Unicode proposal reported no dedicated Korean-input route for halfwidth Jamo and noted that many Korean fonts lacked coverage. A Unicode character picker can enter the exact form.

If a box or another fallback shape appears, the font may not support the character; that display problem does not change the underlying text.

Technical and encoding-specific; unusual in ordinary Korean writing.

Questions people ask

3

Can ᄌ combine with vowels?

No. It is a nonconjoining compatibility character, so it cannot form a syllable block with a vowel. Korean syllable composition uses conjoining Jamo.

Why does ᄌ look wrong or missing?

The font may lack this character and show a fallback shape instead. A 2017 Unicode proposal noted limited font coverage for halfwidth Jamo.

Does normalization preserve the halfwidth form?

Not necessarily. NFKC or NFKD can remove the width distinction and produce ㅈ, so normalized text may no longer contain ᄌ.
