What ᅰ means
ᅰ is a legacy compatibility form related to the Korean vowel ㅞ. A jamo is a Hangul letter used alone or as a building element in a syllable. In ordinary Korean text, ㅞ is the compatibility-jamo form; ᅰ is its conjoining form for syllable assembly.
This halfwidth Hangul belongs to a history of Korean text encoding. The 1974 KS C 5601 N-byte scheme encoded 51 jamo in 7-bit codes to reduce delimiter overhead and storage costs. Halfwidth jamo preserve distinctions needed for compatibility with older character sets; they are not needed to write Korean in ordinary text.
A technical character-set form; its presence points to compatibility with older Korean text encodings.
Halfwidth describes an encoding distinction, not a guaranteed screen width.
