hangul choseong chieuch

Hangul initial chieuch

15/256

ᄎ is Hangul’s initial-form chieuch, the aspirated “ch” consonant used to start a syllable. It is a building block, not a complete syllable; with ᅡ it forms 차. For the same consonant written by itself, Korean normally uses ㅊ; ᄎ marks the initial position.

What ᄎ means

It is the aspirated chieuch consonant in a syllable’s first slot.

Its Korean name is 치읓 (chieuch); its sound is like the “ch” in “church,” with a noticeable puff of air. As a Hangul initial jamo—the first consonant of a syllable—ᄎ marks the opening slot, not a word on its own.

It can look unfinished when sent alone because it has no vowel. Add ᅡ and it joins the syllable: ᄎ plus ᅡ composes to 차.

How did ᄎ become a Hangul letter?

Hangul built ㅊ into a sound-based writing system.

The Annals of King Sejong record a new alphabet called 훈민정음 in 1443; a guide explaining its sounds and forms followed in 1446. It let people write Korean directly. Earlier methods, including Idu and Hyangchal, adapted Chinese characters to write Korean.

The original consonant set formed ㅊ by adding a stroke to ㅈ, within a shape sequence beginning with ㅅ; added strokes marked stronger breath. In the 15th century, a description places the sound near the upper gums. One scholarly account proposes that its point of articulation shifted toward the modern position around the 17th century.

Why does ᄎ differ from ㅊ?

ᄎ marks an initial slot; ㅊ is the standalone compatibility form.

They encode the same consonant in different ways. ᄎ belongs in the opening position of a composed Hangul syllable; ㅊ can stand alone.

Typing differs. A Korean IME combines consonants and vowels into a syllable block, so it may not produce this exact leading form by itself. For ordinary syllables, let the IME compose the letters; use a Unicode character picker or hexadecimal input when you need ᄎ.

Technical and orthographic: ᄎ marks a syllable position, so by itself it reads as a Hangul fragment.

For a consonant standing alone, use ㅊ; ᄎ marks the initial slot.

Why does ᄎ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
