What 앟 means
It is one syllable block inside Korean spelling. The block puts ㅇ at the start, ㅏ in the middle, and ㅎ at the end; meaning comes from the larger word or ending it belongs to.
Hangul was devised under King Sejong in 1443 to write Korean more directly; written Korean had relied on Chinese characters. The 1446 book Hunminjeongeum explains the new writing system’s purpose and design.
Why can 앟 sound different from “ah”?
Its final ㅎ changes with the sounds around it. At a syllable’s end, it can be a clipped t-like stop; Korean sound rules can change it when another syllable follows. Read the whole Korean word: the Unicode name “Ah” does not fix its pronunciation.
Unicode can represent the syllable as one precomposed block or as joining letters ᄋ ᅡ ᇂ. These jamo are individual Korean letters; fonts and software can arrange them differently, but the sequence represents the same syllable.
Neutral inside Korean spelling; the surrounding word determines its tone.
A 2023 study of Korean social-network messages describes ㅎ and ㅋ as laughter shorthand; 앟 is a full syllable, not that shorthand.
