Hangul syllable An

6473/11172

In Korean, 안 means “not” before a verb or adjective, or “inside” as a noun. Context decides; alone, it is not a general “no.”

What 안 means

Its grammatical role decides the reading.

안 춥다 means “not cold”; 집 안 means “inside the house.”

Why is 안 one block?

Hangul groups letters into syllable blocks.

Hangul was designed for accessible Korean writing by 1443; the 1446 Hunminjeongeum text explains it. Earlier writing methods, idu and hyangchal, used Chinese characters for Korean; Hangul offered its own alphabet.

안 combines ㅇ, ㅏ, and ㄴ. A text system may store the syllable as three component letters (jamo) or as one combined character.

1

Why does 안 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
