Hangul syllable 벱

벱 is a Korean Hangul syllable block built from two consonants around a vowel. In a word, it supplies one syllable; the surrounding text gives the word its meaning. A Korean IME composes the parts in order.

Text symbol

What 벱 means

One Korean syllable, written as a single block.

벱 has ㅂ as its opening consonant, ㅔ as its vowel, and a final ㅂ. These component letters are called jamo; Korean writing combines them in one block.

Does 벱 mean anything by itself? It gives one syllable, not a complete word; read the neighboring syllables for the word's meaning.

How do you type 벱?

Use a Korean IME and enter the parts in order.

Type ㅂ, then ㅔ, then ㅂ. A Korean IME (input method editor) combines the jamo into 벱 as you type.

If an app displays 벱 as separate parts, it is showing the same syllable's components.

Why was Hangul created?

To give Korean a script for its own sounds, easier to learn.

The National Hangeul Museum dates the king's first official record of creating new letters to lunar December 1443. The 1446 guide to the script, 훈민정음, explained its purpose, principles, and use; the new system represented Korean speech more directly than Chinese characters and was easier to learn.

Consonant shapes reflect the speech organs; vowel shapes use marks for sky, earth, and a person. Earlier names for the script include 정음, 언문, 반절, 국문, and 국서. Hangeul became the common name in the early 20th century, especially after 1928.

In Korean writing, 벱 is neutral; alone, it reads as an isolated syllable or text fragment.

why does 벱 look different in different fonts?

Yes. Unicode 17.0 treats the chart glyph as an example, not a required font design. Fonts can draw the same syllable differently while the text remains 벱.
