What 븓 means

The surrounding Korean word gives this syllable its meaning. Three Korean jamo (letters) form it: initial ㅂ, vowel ㅡ, and batchim ㄷ, the bottom consonant.

Hangul’s creation is first recorded in 1443; the guide Hunminjeongeum (“Correct Sounds for Teaching the People”) introduced it in 1446. Earlier, Idu used Chinese characters to write Korean. Hangul represented Korean speech more directly, was designed to be easy to learn, and later became Korea’s native script.

Korean fonts shape the jamo together within one square cell, so they appear as a single block.
