What 븘 means

Read it with its neighboring syllables, not by itself.

The generated “beuls” name comes from its jamo (Korean letters): initial ᄇ, vowel ᅳ, final ᆳ (ㄹㅅ).

The 1459 text 월인석보 25 uses 븘 굳 for a covered, smokeless fire pit and 븘 구데 for “in the fire pit.” Hangul addressed the mismatch between Korean speech and Chinese-character writing. Its creation is first recorded in 1443; Hunminjeongeum, its explanatory book, followed in 1446.
