What 본 means
Word position separates the two uses. 본인 (“oneself”) and 본질 (“essence”) use Sino-Korean 本; 본래 means “originally,” and 본격 means “in earnest.” After a verb, 가 본 적 means “have been”; 본 is 보다’s past form in a construction for trying or experiencing an action.
Hangul was created to write Korean speech. Its creation is recorded in 1443; Hunminjeongeum, the book that explains it, appeared in 1446. Chinese writing on oracle-bone inscriptions dates from the 14th–11th centuries BCE. A 2025 study proposes one graph as an early form of 本, though readings differ.

Questions people ask
1Why does 본 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
