Hangul Syllable 볃

4292/11172

By itself, 볃 has no fixed Korean word meaning; it is one Hangul syllable inside a larger word. Its parts are ㅂ, ㅕ, and final ㄷ (받침, the closing consonant). A Korean 2-beolsik keyboard enters it with q, u, e. A 1446 guide uses it to illustrate a final ㄷ reading of 彆.

What 볃 means

It has no fixed word meaning by itself. 볃 is made of ㅂ, ㅕ, and final ㄷ, the closing consonant called 받침. That makes it one Hangul syllable; a Korean word or sentence tells you what it means. If it arrives alone, ask for the surrounding text.

볃 appears in the 1446 Hunminjeongeum Haerye (훈민정음 해례), a guide to Hangul, as an example of reading the Chinese character 彆 with final ㄷ. It contrasts with the customary Korean reading 별, which ends in ㄹ. Here 볃 demonstrates pronunciation; it does not show that the syllable has a separate message meaning.

How did Hangul get its syllable blocks?

King Sejong's court devised Hangul in 1443 so Korean could be written directly with alphabetic letters arranged into syllable blocks. Before it, writing Korean relied heavily on Chinese characters and ways of adapting them, which made learning to read Korean difficult for many. The guide explains the letters' sounds and how they fit together.

A 1894 reform made Hangul Korea's national script, though Chinese characters remained common in official records. In 1910, Japanese rule ended Hangul's official status, but scholars continued studying and teaching it.

The script had names such as jeongeum and eonmun, then gukmun after 1894. Hangeul appears in records in the early 1910s and was widely used by 1928. Some scholars propose that Phags-pa, a square-shaped Mongolian script based on Tibetan, influenced Hangul's design; that proposal concerns the writing system, not 볃's own origin.

How do I type 볃?

Use a Korean 2-beolsik input method. On that layout, q, u, and e enter ㅂ, ㅕ, and ㄷ; the input method combines them as 볃.

Neutral as text; the syllable has no built-in chat tone, so the surrounding Korean words carry the message.

If 볃 arrives alone, ask for the Korean word or sentence around it before guessing the sender's meaning.
